Project Summary

PREPARING STRONG SCIENTIFIC AND MATHEMATICS LEADERS FOR VIRGINIA MIDDLE SCHOOLS

A total of 24 outstanding middle school teachers who are enrolled as students in the masters level Interdisciplinary Science program are providing leadership to improve mathematics and science instruction throughout central Virginia. The program is offered by Virginia Commonwealth University in collaboration with the University of Virginia.

The graduate students are supported by the National Science Foundation through the Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) program. They are receiving training for in-school activities through the Mathematics and Science Center of the Richmond area schools. Fellows are providing enriched science and mathematics disciplinary content for current middle school teachers, working with teachers within training institutes and on a one-to-one basis, and offering model lessons for students in the teachers' classrooms.

Each Graduate Fellow will complete a M.S. in Interdisciplinary Science. The Interdisciplinary Science program includes graduate course work offered by Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia in at least two disciplines, an interdisciplinary science course, a statistical methods course, and a final thesis/ project. After serving as Fellows and completing their graduate program, selected fellows will become members of the Clinical Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University or the University of Virginia, continuing to link the schools and the university teacher preparation programs.
