Each year, each FIPSE institution is being "paired"
with another institution to enable the programs to provide
mutual support/encouragement/assessment. Each partner is
conducting a visit to its paired institution and in turn
is being visited by a team from that institution.
For Year 3 the pairings are as follows: Norfolk
State University – Virginia Union University, Virginia
Commonwealth University – Old Dominion University,
James Madison University – Longwood University, Virginia
Tech – Virginia Intermont College, and Radford University
– Mary Washington College.
Each college will send a team to visit the middle school
preparation program of its partner institution; In turn,
the visited college will send a team to visit its partner.
General suggestions for visit:
- The visit should be scheduled well in advance to increase
the chances of participation by students, administrators,
and faculty
- The visitors should receive a packet prior to the visit,
including information that is available on the Web, hard
copies of materials developed for other purposes, rationale
for the program requirements, etc.
- In preparing for the visit, the hosts should think about
how to make use of the visit to further their own goals,
realizing that each institution has its own organizational
and programmatic features; e.g. to gain the attention
of important administrators or faculty; to encourage conversation
among groups that do not talk to each other; to shed positive
light on accomplishments of your college, etc.
The visit should be scheduled to include as many of the
following features as feasible:
- Discussions with Deans of Education and Arts and Science
- Meetings with faculty from mathematics, education and
as many different science departments as possible
- Discussions with pre-service teachers
- Visits to classes
- Meetings with K-12 Clinical faculty
- Sessions that involve individuals from many different
departments
