Mathematics faculty at VCU are actively engaged with our colleagues across Virginia and the nation in activities designed to improve student learning in mathematics and science at all levels. Many of these activities are conducted in conjunction with the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition, a non-partisan public interest group dedicated to the improvement of mathematics and science Education in Virginia.
We are acutely aware of the need for many more well qualified middle school mathematics and science teachers. With support from FIPSE of the United States Department of Education, we are leading a 10-college effort to strengthen our programs and prepare many more teachers at this level.
In conjunction with the University of Virginia and the Mathematics and Science Center and with support from the NSF, we offer an Interdisciplinary Mathematics and Science Masters program for outstanding middle school teachers.
Our department provides leadership for the NSF-supported Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers program which engages 12 Virginia colleges in improving their programs for future elementary and middle school teachers.
We publish the Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations on behalf of the Coalition. The Journal features papers on the education of future mathematics and science teachers.
