Frequently Asked Questions

How do I declare a Math Minor?

Minor Information

Who do I talk to if I have a problem with a Mathematics Professor?
If you have a problem with a professor, departmental policy, or another student in one of your mathematics classes, you are urged to contact the Department Ombudsman, Dr. Joy Whitenack. You can reach him by telephone at 804-828-5901. Her office is in Harris Hall room 4159-A.

Where do I go to get an override request?
Override requests are handeled through the Mathematics lab.

How do I get a Math Advisor?
During their first semester, VCU students majoring in Mathematics will be assigned a faculty advisor from the Department of Mathematics. Students in the K-8 Mathematics Specialist program will be assigned department faculty members working in collaboration with the School of Education.
Majors are assigned approximately two weeks after the end of add/drop each semester. If you have not yet been assigned an advisor, are thinking about or planning on becoming a Math major, or have questions about the minor, please e-mail Hollyn Mangione at mangioneht@vcu.edu.
Once you get assigned to a faculty advisor, you will be recieving an e-mail from the department every semester, prior to registration, asking you to make an appointment with your advisor.

How do I know what class to take?
The University College administers the Math Placement Test. The purpose of the Mathematics Placement Test is to place you into the highest level math class you may initially take at VCU and in which you have a reasonable expectation of success. The Mathematics Placement Test does not give you credit for a math class, nor does it satisfy or exempt you from any math course your major or school requires of you for graduation. The placement test is good for 12 months only.
All students enrolling in a mathematics, statistics, or computer science course must satisfy the prerequisite for the course before enrolling in the course. The prerequisite may be satisfied either by placement into the course based on the results of either the VCU Mathematics Placement Test, or by successful completion of the prerequisite course. Your advisor can help you determine which mathematics course is appropriate for your major.
VCU offers the Mathematics Placement Test in two formats: the VCU Online Mathematics Placement Test and the Compass Mathematics Placement Test. Only new incoming freshmen or transfer students may take the Online version. All current VCU students must take the Compass version. If you have questions please contact Mark Bassard at (804) 827-8120 or by e-mail: mbassard@vcu.edu.
Information about prerequisite courses can be found here.
