Department Chair, Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. We are looking for an accomplished mathematician who wants to make a difference. The chair must have the vision and skill necessary to lead the department as it expands and strengthens its PhD program in Systems Modeling and Analysis, contributes to the university's goal of becoming a leading research university, and continues in its strong commitment to excellence in its undergraduate and graduate programs.
The preferred starting date is July 1, 2013.
This 12 month position is available at the associate or full professor level. The individual is to build on the Department's strengths so that it fulfills its potential as a center of mathematical research and teaching. The chair has the responsibility to oversee all departmental activities related to the faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and staff. The chair will be required to have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. In addition to a strong record of research in mathematics or applied mathematics, he or she should have demonstrated success in teaching, experience in attracting external funding, and a proven ability to provide academic leadership and demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
The chair should provide leadership to the department on a day-to-day basis. In addition, the chair must be able to work with faculty and students from multiple disciplines; attract and retain top-tier faculty; enhance existing undergraduate and graduate degree programs; advance the status of the department, in terms of funded research and graduate education; support and promote the service mission of the department; maintain an innovative, well-funded and nationally recognized research program in mathematics; teach classes, at undergraduate and/or graduate levels; and, supervise high quality graduate research.
The department has 36 full-time faculty members, 15 of whom are tenured and 7 of whom are tenure-eligible. The mission of the department is to foster excellence in mathematical research and to offer a strong undergraduate and graduate education that will prepare our students for stimulating and rewarding employment, career, and life-long learning opportunities. We currently have 160 undergraduate majors and 40 full and part-time graduate students. In addition, we have 55 part- time majors in the mathematics specialist masters program. The department’s research strengths include math biology, discrete math, analysis, and mathematics education.

Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Virginia, seeks a Mathematics Instructor in a continuing nine-month collateral position. This position may continue for up to seven years. The Position will begin August 16, 2013. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate mathematics, primarily in courses in our teacher preparation track, courses designed for the LSEE degree program, and courses designed for the Math Specialist program. In addition, the successful candidate will be involved in planning, coordinating, and supervising visits by LSEE majors to local elementary schools and advising and mentoring students planning be elementary teachers. Candidates with teaching/and or research interests in all areas will be considered, but preference will be given to those with experience in mathematics for elementary school teachers.
REQUIRED: Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences or, a Master’s degree in Education with significant experience in teaching mathematics and mathematics for elementary teachers, or Ph.D. in a related field. Applicants must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
